A fillet board can see tuna blood, mackerel oil, bait slime, squid, and a full day under hard sun. So, does HDPE absorb fish odors? Under normal use, high-density polyethylene does not readily absorb fish odors the way wood, cheap soft plastic, fabric, or porous composite materials can. But a board can still smell fish if residue is left in knife marks, corners, mounting hardware, or the surface film after cleaning.

After washing, a paste of baking soda and water can be worked into scored areas with a nylon brush, then rinsed away. A properly diluted sanitizer may also be appropriate when used according to the product label. The goal is to remove the residue feeding the odor, not to cover it with fragrance.
Does HDPE Absorb Fish Odors Over Time?
A well-made HDPE board should not become permanently fish-scented simply because it is used for fish. If an odor returns after every wash, inspect the board and its installation instead of assuming the material has absorbed the smell.
Check for deep cuts, roughened areas, dried residue around the edges, and buildup under mounted accessories. Also inspect storage conditions.
